Namaste Jane

I am so sorry to be writing this. For those of you who met Jane Henderson in one of my classes, workshops or retreat I have some sad news. Jane died, driving to visit her family in rural NSW on Saturday.

She was such a lovely, inspiring lady who taught me so much..

We sang together in a community choir and when I finished my teacher training and organised Classes at Empire Bay Hall, Jane was keen to come to class. During my teacher training I realised that the so called beginners classes I was being taught were not designed for the average student but for the young, fit and healthy. My lovely friend had 2 knee replacements and a previous badly fractured pelvis. At the time I had no idea how to adapt the classes - my first challenge! My Radiography training and my knowledge of anatomy, reading and experimenting I have learnt over the last 3 years how to teach a class suitable for ever student and I love to see students of all ages and levels practicing together and supporting one another. I realise that more then anything in our society we need gentle, safe and relaxing yoga classes suitable for everyone and with Jane as my guide I started the Gentle/Relax Yoga Class on Monday mornings. For a while it was Jane and I practicing together and gradually over the years more students joined us.

I will miss her very much…..she was a wonderful yoga student and person.

Yoga and Meditation on Holiday

Take your time, enjoy the moment.
Stay and absorb and experience a different culture, a different landscape, a different climate, a different lifestyle.
Sounds wonderful but we often get caught up in trying to see too much and do too much and end up spending a lot of our precious holidays in aeroplanes, cars and trains. In traffic jams and getting lost, in waiting......
I have a couple of essentials.
1.   A small 30ml jar of coconut oil and 10 drops of peppermint, basil and eucalyptus. I sit cross legged on my seat and spend time massaging my feet, hands, face and neck. I am always learning and aeroplane travel gives me plenty of time to study. At the moment I am studying Ayurvedic acupressure points known as Marmas and this trip I practiced and experienced their effects on my mind particularly the Marmas for calm and relaxation....the time passed very quickly and I slept better than I ever have on an aeroplane.
2.   A selection of yoga nidra CDs. I know it would be much easier with an iPhone and ear things but I leave my phone at home........
3.   A yoga mat. My sister in law bought me one in London and it travelled to Norfolk, London, Middlesbrough and Tuscany.

Ayurveda                                   Spring represents new growth.
A time to stretch muscles, move, be motivated and creative. New life, new plans, a time to be making dreams come true. Because spring brings in change it is a time where Vata may become imbalanced. Vata is the energies of air and space and key postures to help bring peace and calm include side bends, tree, mountain, sitting postures. To help you bring your plans into reality practice the yoga warrior. Look along your middle finger and point your finger toward your future. Imagine how you want it to be and what the first step is you need to take. Change sides and imagine you are holding a bow and send your arrow into the future. A yoga warrior has strength, determination and the courage to change their life along positive lines.
Change is always accompanied by stress and worry so remember to include lots of sitting postures and pranams in your yoga practice.

Holidays are a time to enjoy change. To be more open about what you eat. Finding organic produce is not easy so let it go...... I love to wander the local supermarkets and try new things. I don't eat meat but I eat fish occasionally. In Italy I love the local hard cheeses, the anchovies, the delicious tomatoes. I enjoyed a lot of  family meals in England and eating fish made it easier for my meat eating family. Often something special was prepared for Rosie and I and there was always cake for dessert.......

I wish you many enjoyable holidays.                        Namaste Julie
